Bill Dawson qualified as a pharmacist and completed a PhD at the School of Pharmacy in London before joining the staff there. He moved to the USA as a staff scientist at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology and then joined Eli Lilly in the UK as a pharmacologist. He has published more than 100 articles, 12 as single author and 3 in Nature in the fields of allergy, inflammation, toxicology and medicinal chemistry. During his 27 years with Lilly, 14 as Research Director, the group took 17 compounds into development, 7 into man and 2 to the market. Active in Research Council Committees and Panels, he chaired the Biomolecular Sciences Committee of BBSRC and EPSRC from its inception for 4 years. He was a member of the Pharmacy sub panel for the RAE in 1996, 2001 and 2008. He has chaired postdoctoral programmes for EPSRC at Nottingham and Loughborough Universities. He is currently Pro Chancellor at De Montfort University and a General Pharmaceutical Council accreditor.He retired from Eli Lilly in 1996 and established Bionet Ltd as a healthcare consultancy. He is a non-executive director of Proteome Sciences plc. He has been a non-executive director of 8 other companies.
